Animals are one of the friendliest ways into Polish vocabulary. The words are short, they come up naturally with children and pets, and many of them appear in idioms and place names once you start noticing. The general word for an animal is zwierzę, and its plural is slightly irregular — zwierzęta — which is worth memorising early because that same -ę / -ęta pattern turns up in other young-creature words like dziecko / dzieci (child / children).

The two you'll use most are pies (dog) and kot (cat). Both are masculine, and both are a neat first look at how Polish treats living things differently from objects: when a dog or cat becomes the object of a sentence, its ending changes to match the genitive form, so “I have a dog” is mam psa and “I have a cat” is mam kota. You don't need to master that rule to use the words, but seeing it here makes the grammar lessons click faster later on.

Poland's countryside and forests give the wild-animal words real cultural weight. The bocian (stork) is a beloved national symbol that returns each spring, the żubr (European bison) survives in the ancient Białowieża forest, and the niedźwiedź (bear) and wilk (wolf) still roam the mountains in the south. That last word, niedźwiedź, is famous for being a mouthful — take it slowly, syllable by syllable (nyed-ŹVYEDŹ), and it becomes a satisfying little trophy once you can say it cleanly.
